Unlocking Self-Healing: Gabby Bernstein on Internal Family Systems and Overcoming Trauma

Self-improvement is an ongoing journey, and few understand this better than best-selling author, speaker, and spiritual guide Gabby Bernstein. Celebrating her 10th book, Self-Help, Bernstein joins Heal Squad with Maria Menounos to discuss a powerful therapeutic framework called Internal Family Systems (IFS). This groundbreaking approach helps individuals uncover hidden patterns—like self-judgment, people-pleasing, and addiction—and embrace healing practices that lead to personal transformation.

What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

IFS therapy operates on the premise that our personalities are composed of different “parts” that serve various functions. Bernstein explains that many of the behaviors we view as negative—such as perfectionism, controlling tendencies, or emotional numbing—are actually protective mechanisms developed during childhood. These “protector parts” shield us from unresolved emotional wounds and traumatic experiences.

“The part of us that might numb out with YouTube or binge on food is a protector part,” says Bernstein. “It’s protecting very young emotional disturbances from our childhood.”

The goal of IFS is not to eliminate these parts but to acknowledge, understand, and ultimately heal them.

How Childhood Trauma Shapes Our Adult Patterns

Bernstein shares her own experience with IFS, revealing how her childhood trauma shaped her controlling tendencies. “As a child, I experienced attachment breaches and extreme trauma,” she says. “My brain felt out of control, and so I built up a protection mechanism that said, ‘I will do whatever it takes to be in control.'”

Menounos relates deeply to this concept, reflecting on her own upbringing, where she constantly worried about her father’s health due to his diabetes. “The fear and anxiety in my house were overwhelming. I always had to be in control,” she shares. Through their discussion, Bernstein helps Menounos recognize that her perfectionism and constant anticipation of disaster stem from childhood protector parts that have remained active well into adulthood.

The 4-Step Process to Healing Protector Parts

In Self-Help, Bernstein presents a simple yet powerful four-step method to reconnect with and heal these protector parts:

  1. Choose to Check In – Instead of automatically reacting to stress or triggering situations, pause and turn inward.
  2. Get Curious – Identify where in your body you feel tension and ask yourself how long this feeling has been present.
  3. Compassionate Connection – Instead of judging yourself, acknowledge these parts with kindness and ask what they need.
  4. Self-Leadership – Reassure yourself that you are safe, and begin to create new, healthier patterns.

“One minute a day of these four steps can change your life,” Bernstein insists.

Breaking Generational Trauma and Parenting with Awareness

Menounos, a new mother, expresses concerns about inadvertently passing down anxieties to her daughter. Bernstein reassures her, emphasizing that the key to conscious parenting is acknowledging and addressing one’s own protector parts.

“Your child doesn’t need you to be perfect,” Bernstein says. “They need you to be present, aware, and willing to work on yourself.”

She shares a story about her own son, who developed a “boss” persona after being bullied by an older child. By using IFS techniques, she helped him feel safe without reinforcing his protector part’s defensive behavior.

The Connection Between Mental and Physical Health

Both Menounos and Bernstein discuss how unresolved emotional trauma can manifest physically. Menounos reflects on her own health journey, noting how chronic stress and hypervigilance may have contributed to serious medical conditions. Bernstein adds that anxiety, back pain, and even gastrointestinal issues can be protector parts trying to shield the body from deeper emotional pain.

A Path to Lasting Change

Ultimately, Bernstein’s approach is about cultivating self-compassion and moving toward self-leadership. “Self is like the sun behind the clouds,” she explains. “When we begin to heal, the clouds dissipate, allowing our true selves to shine through.”

For those looking to break free from unhealthy patterns, Self-Help provides a structured yet accessible path. By applying IFS principles, individuals can move beyond survival mode and step into a life of greater peace, resilience, and fulfillment.
