Control Fear and Live with Love with Mark Nepo

The Power of Choosing Love Over Fear

Fear is a natural part of the human experience, but what if there was a way to transform it into something greater? Poet, teacher, and spiritual guide Mark Nepo sat down with Heal Squad with Maria Menounos to discuss how we can navigate fear, cultivate love, and live with greater connection and purpose.

Understanding Fear: A Natural but Inflated Response

“Fear is an indicator of something,” Maria Menounos noted. “But 99% of what you’re afraid of usually doesn’t actually happen.” Nepo echoed this sentiment, explaining that while fear is real, it often takes up more space in our minds than necessary.

He suggests that instead of suppressing fear, we should acknowledge it—but not let it define our reality. “Our fear isn’t the only thing in us,” he shared. “We have to feel it thoroughly to the bottom, because where we’re standing under it is not afraid. The earth under us is not afraid. Life is not afraid.”

Staying Present: The Key to Overcoming Fear

In moments of extreme fear—whether it’s concerns over safety, illness, or uncertainty—Nepo advises against hiding. “Vanishing and hiding only empower fear,” he said. Instead, he believes staying visible and present is essential. “Fear makes people desperate, and desperation leads to harmful decisions. But if we meet fire with warmth and light rather than more fire, we can shift our perspective.”

Even in the darkest times, life continues. “When I was on my cancer journey, I was terrified,” Nepo shared. “But at the same time, people were falling in love, babies were being born, and kindness was being exchanged. My fear was real, but it wasn’t everything. Letting those kindnesses mix with my fear helped me right-size it.”

How to Shift from Fear to Love

When asked how we can choose love in extreme circumstances—like crime, illness, or personal betrayals—Nepo emphasized that love isn’t about ignoring reality, but rather responding to it with clarity and integrity. “Love involves truth and authenticity. It’s not about passive acceptance but about making choices that honor both ourselves and others.”

He also touched on the importance of balance. “We’ve become addicted to the noise of everything falling apart. But things are also constantly coming together—they just do so quietly. It’s our job to witness both.”

Daily Practices to Strengthen Love Over Fear

Building the ‘love over fear’ muscle requires daily practice. Nepo suggests:

  • Recognizing when fear inflates. When you feel fear, ask yourself if it’s truly as big as it seems. Often, just taking a moment to pause and reflect helps recalibrate your reaction.
  • Softening when you tense up. Fear often causes us to physically and emotionally contract. Actively practice opening up in these moments.
  • Grounding yourself in the present. Give full attention to the smallest detail near you—a tree, a cup of tea, or the sunlight on your face. “Life will talk to us if we listen.”
  • Connecting with others. Talking to a friend, mentor, or loved one can break the seal of fear and help you regain perspective.

Creating Rituals That Ground You

Rather than following rigid spiritual practices, Nepo believes in integrating mindfulness into everyday life. “Each morning, I start my day by letting light in, caring for something living (like my dog), and doing something for someone I love,” he shared. “Simple acts, done with presence, can shape your entire day.”

Maria echoed this sentiment, sharing her own morning ritual of gratitude, connecting with her dogs, and embracing small joys like smelling her coffee grinds. “People think they need an intense spiritual practice to be grounded, but it’s often about appreciating the simple moments.”

Final Thoughts: We Are Better Together

At the heart of Nepo’s message is the belief that we are more together than alone. “We never know which small act of kindness is the one that keeps the world going,” he reminded listeners. In uncertain times, the best way forward is through connection, presence, and a commitment to choosing love—even when fear feels overwhelming.
