The Truth About Clean Skincare  and Expired Products with Jamie O’Banion

Your skincare products might not be as effective—or as safe—as you think. In a recent episode of Heal Squad with Maria Menounos, Jamie O’Banion, founder and CEO of BeautyBio, shared game-changing insights on clean skincare, the hidden dangers of expired products, and why your dry shampoo could be making your hair thinner. With her background as a lab chemist and beauty researcher, Jamie is pulling back the curtain on what really works—and what’s just marketing hype. If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re using the right skincare routine, this is your wake-up call.

Why Clean Skincare Matters

Clean skincare has become a buzzword in the beauty industry, but what does it really mean? According to O’Banion, it’s about using ingredients that work in harmony with your body’s natural ecosystem while avoiding harmful chemicals like Benzene—often found in dry shampoos and sunscreens, with links to cancer.

“Your skin is your body’s largest organ,” O’Banion explains. “It absorbs everything you put on it. That’s why clean beauty is critical—it’s not just about avoiding breakouts, it’s about long-term health.”

Unlike the U.S., European Union standards are far stricter on which ingredients can be used in personal care products. “The U.S. is behind,” Maria adds. “We assume that regulatory agencies have our best interests in mind, but we have to advocate for ourselves.”

Is Your Skincare Expired?

Most people don’t realize that skincare products degrade quickly—especially those stored in jars where bacteria can break down the active ingredients. “Every time you dip your fingers into a jar of cream, you’re contaminating it,” Jamie reveals. “And bacteria actually eat away at the efficacy of your ingredients.”

O’Banion suggests looking for airless pumps and checking expiration dates. “If you don’t know when it expires, it might already be ineffective!” She’s even working on an idea for QR codes on products so you can scan them to see if they’ve gone bad—a game-changer for skincare organization.

The Problem With Dry Shampoo

If you’re a dry shampoo devotee, brace yourself. It could be thinning your hair.

“Most dry shampoos contain starch and alcohol, which can clog follicles and lead to hair thinning over time,” O’Banion says. “Your scalp is skin. If you keep layering it with chemicals, it reacts by producing more oil to compensate, making your hair greasier—and making you reach for more dry shampoo. It’s a vicious cycle.”

Her solution? A starch-free, alcohol-free alternative that actually supports scalp health rather than damaging it.

The Essential Skincare Routine (Broken Down by Age)

With thousands of serums, creams, and treatments on the market, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. O’Banion breaks down the actual essentials:

Morning Routine:

  • Cleanser – A gentle, sulfate-free formula to cleanse without stripping.
  • Vitamin C Serum – Opt for Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate or Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, which are gentler yet effective.
  • Moisturizer – Look for ceramide-rich formulas to protect your skin barrier.
  • Sunscreen – Use a physical (not chemical) sunscreen with at least 10% zinc oxide.

Nighttime Routine:

  • Cleanser – Wash away makeup and pollution.
  • Microneedling (Optional) – If using a safe, at-home tool, this preps your skin to absorb products more effectively.
  • Retinol or Retinoid – A must for collagen production. Opt for prescription-strength retinoic acid if needed.
  • Moisturizer – Hydrating creams with ceramides lock everything in.

“Start early,” Jamie warns. “After 18, your collagen production starts declining by 1% a year. The earlier you incorporate Vitamin C and Retinol, the better.”

The One Thing You Need to Clean More Often

It’s not just skincare you need to refresh—your makeup brushes could be harboring bacteria that lead to breakouts. “Wash them at least every two weeks,” Jamie advises. She also suggests a sterilization chamber for makeup brushes, sponges, and beauty tools—something she’s working on developing.

Takeaways from Jamie O’Banion’s Beauty Secrets

  • Clean skincare isn’t just a trend—it’s essential for long-term health.
  • Expired skincare could be useless or even harmful.
  • Dry shampoo might be thinning your hair—opt for alcohol-free, starch-free versions.
  • Simplify your skincare routine to essentials: Cleanser, Vitamin C, Moisturizer, SPF (morning) and Retinol, Moisturizer (night).
  • Makeup brushes need regular cleaning to prevent skin irritation and breakouts.
