Healing Trauma Bonds and Relationships with Dr. Nicole LePera

Understanding Trauma Bonds and Their Impact on Relationships

Relationships are at the core of human experience, but for many of us, past traumas shape the way we connect with others. Dr. Nicole LePera, known as “The Holistic Psychologist,” sat down with Heal Squad with Maria Menounos to discuss the deep-seated effects of childhood trauma, how it influences our relationships, and the tangible steps we can take to heal.

Dr. LePera explains that much of our dysfunction and emotional pain stem from early life experiences. “We are highly habitual creatures,” she says, highlighting how many of us operate on autopilot, replaying old beliefs and behavioral patterns without realizing it.

But how do we break free from these cycles? According to Dr. LePera, it all begins with consciousness.

The Power of Consciousness: Becoming Present in Your Life

If you’ve ever arrived at work without remembering the drive there, you’ve experienced autopilot. Our brain operates on ingrained habits, often making us react to situations based on past experiences rather than the present moment.

Dr. LePera notes that many of us live in a reactive state, governed by emotions stored in our subconscious. This means we often assign meaning to situations based on outdated beliefs formed in childhood. For example, if we were conditioned to believe we are unworthy of love, we might interpret a partner’s delayed text response as a sign of rejection rather than an innocent delay.

The key to breaking this cycle? Developing self-awareness through conscious check-ins. Dr. LePera suggests setting an alarm once a day to stop and assess your state:

  • Where was your mind before the alarm went off?
  • Were you lost in past regrets or future anxieties?
  • How does your body feel in the present moment?

Practicing these check-ins helps us gain control over our thoughts rather than letting them control us.

Overcoming Overwhelm: Small Daily Promises

The idea of healing past trauma can feel overwhelming, especially in a world accustomed to instant gratification. Maria Menounos expressed this frustration, noting, “I wish there was just a place we could check into for a week where they would just fix all of this.”

While no quick fix exists, Dr. LePera reassures us that small, consistent efforts lead to lasting change. Instead of attempting a total life overhaul, she recommends making one small daily promise—a commitment that is manageable and repeatable. This could be as simple as:

  • Practicing one minute of conscious breathing
  • Journaling for five minutes
  • Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning

These micro-changes strengthen new neural pathways, making transformation more sustainable over time.

The Vagus Nerve: Your Body’s Reset Button

A crucial piece of the healing puzzle is regulating the nervous system. One of the most effective ways to do this is by stimulating the vagus nerve, which helps shift the body from stress mode into a state of calm.

Dr. LePera explains that many self-regulation techniques—such as deep breathing, yoga, and cold exposure—work by activating the vagus nerve. Simple exercises to stimulate this nerve include:

  • Singing or humming (activates vocal cord muscles connected to the vagus nerve)
  • Gargling with water
  • Practicing deep belly breathing (inhale for four seconds, exhale for eight)
  • Taking cold showers or engaging in cold plunges

Understanding how these techniques function on a physiological level helps us commit to them more effectively. As Maria noted, “People always say yoga and breathwork are important, but when you realize why—that they calm the vagus nerve—it suddenly clicks.”

Building Emotional Resilience: Don’t Wait Until You’re Overwhelmed

One of Dr. LePera’s most valuable insights is that we shouldn’t wait until we’re in crisis mode to start using these tools. Practicing breathwork, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation techniques in daily life makes them easier to access during high-stress moments.

She also emphasizes the importance of not depleting yourself. Chronic stress leads to emotional reactivity, making it harder to access conscious decision-making. Signs of depletion include:

  • Constantly feeling “on edge”
  • Easily snapping at loved ones
  • Experiencing frequent anxiety or overwhelm

To prevent this, prioritize rest and regulate stress before it spirals.

Healing Without Financial Barriers

For those without access to therapy, Dr. LePera reminds us that healing is still possible. Social media, free online resources, and community-based support groups can provide valuable knowledge and tools. She built her platform to make psychological insights widely accessible, ensuring that financial limitations aren’t a barrier to personal growth.

She encourages people to start small: seek out free content, engage in self-guided healing practices, and most importantly, stay committed to the journey.

Final Thoughts: Consciousness is the Key to Change

Healing trauma and building healthy relationships isn’t about achieving a perfect state—it’s about cultivating awareness, consistency, and self-compassion. The foundation of all transformation lies in being present, recognizing old patterns, and making small daily choices toward a healthier self.
