Nicole Walters on Parenting, Resilience, and Thriving in Business
Finding Purpose Through Stillness
Nicole Walters, entrepreneur, TV personality, and mom, joined Heal Squad with Maria Menounos to share invaluable insights on business, parenting, and overcoming adversity. She emphasized the importance of taking a self-care sabbatical, a practice where she takes 3–5 days every quarter to be alone, reflect, and listen to her own needs.
“You spend so much of your life putting other people first—meeting their expectations, hitting their goals, and doing what you’re obligated to do—that sometimes you lose sight of what you want,” Walters explained. “In those quiet moments, I can really drill down and ask myself: Does this align with what God has for me?”
From Panhandling to Parenthood: How Nicole Became a Mom Overnight
While on a date night with her husband, Walters came across a woman panhandling with her three-year-old daughter on a chilly October night in Baltimore. Unable to ignore the situation, she stopped to help. That moment changed the course of her life.
After discovering the woman had two other children at home and was about to be incarcerated, Walters and her husband stepped in to keep the girls together. Initially offering mentorship, their involvement deepened, and within a year, the children were calling them “Mom” and “Dad.”
“We wanted to make sure they were stable and cared for,” Walters said. “Their biological mother agreed that staying with us made sense. We co-parented for a while, and then she signed over custody. Now, I’m Mom.”
Teaching Kids Resilience & The Power of Therapy
Raising three daughters, one of whom battled Stage 4 lymphoma, Walters has made mental health a non-negotiable priority in her home. “We spend a mortgage in therapy,” she joked, emphasizing that her children always have a safe place to unpack their emotions.
For families who may not have the financial means for therapy, she recommends Open Path Collective, a resource that offers therapy on a sliding scale starting at $30 per session. She also stresses the importance of fostering open communication through one-on-ones—a concept borrowed from corporate culture.
“At any point, if my kids say, ‘I need a one-on-one,’ I stop everything,” Walters explained. “It means I’ll sit with them in their emotion. They don’t have to talk, but they never have to stand in it alone.”
The Role of Faith and Mindset in Overcoming Hardship
When her daughter was diagnosed with Stage 4 lymphoma, Walters’ faith became her anchor. “Toxic positivity is pretending that nothing bad will ever happen,” she noted. “Real positivity is saying, bad things will happen, but I can handle it.“
She chose to focus on the statistical truth that there are more cancer survivors than not. “We never owned cancer—it wasn’t part of our family. It was just a visitor, and we treated it as such. We laughed about it. We made fun of it. We refused to let it define us.”
Her daughter’s aggressive treatment plan, coupled with an unwavering belief in recovery, led to a miraculous outcome—she completed her rounds of chemotherapy in half the expected time, and today, she is in remission.
Keeping Marriage Strong Amid Business and Family Demands
With a thriving career, three children, and a new reality show, She’s the Boss, Walters and her husband have created a structured approach to marriage that helps them grow together rather than apart.
“He’s the COO of our home, and I’m the CEO. We both have our lanes,” Walters shared. “He has something called ‘The Veto,’ which means if he feels very strongly about something, I respect it.”
Despite her strong-willed nature, she recognizes the importance of balance. “I get all the yeses, so if he has a hard no, I honor that.”
Final Takeaways: The Power of Perspective
Walters’ story is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and intentionality. Whether in business, parenting, or health, her approach remains the same—face challenges head-on, stay present, and choose gratitude.
“Everything that happens to us is just part of our story—it doesn’t dictate who we are or determine our destiny,” she said.
