Charlotte Flair on Wrestling, Confidence, and Embracing Her Legacy
Charlotte Flair, the reigning SmackDown Women’s Champion and wrestling royalty, sat down with friend Maria Menounos on her podcast to discuss her career, the pressures of living up to her family name, and the journey that led her to becoming one of WWE’s biggest stars.
The Woo That Defined Her
Charlotte recalls how, even before stepping into the ring, the iconic “Woo” chant was a part of her life. “I remember being in high school, playing volleyball, and the other teams would woo to distract me,” she said. This unintentional training in focus would later prove invaluable in the wrestling world.
From College Athlete to WWE Superstar
Despite growing up as Ric Flair’s daughter, wrestling was never part of Charlotte’s initial plans. “I played volleyball at Appalachian State, and I dabbled in basketball, but I never really thought about wrestling,” she admitted. However, a casual dinner with John Laurinaitis changed everything. “He was actually talking to my little brother about wrestling and then just looked at me and said, ‘What about you?’ And I was like, ‘I guess?’” Three months later, she was training in Tampa, and the rest is history.
Overcoming Personal Struggles
Charlotte’s journey hasn’t been without personal struggles. Her book, Second Nature, reveals her vulnerabilities, from failed relationships to self-doubt. “I had already been married twice, went through a codependent relationship, and struggled with confidence. People assumed I had it all together because of my dad, but I was still figuring things out.”
She credits wrestling with helping her grow. “I created this character that I wanted to be in my real life. The stronger my character got, the stronger I became.”
Honoring Her Brother’s Legacy
One of the most emotional parts of Charlotte’s journey is carrying on the dream of her late brother, Reid Flair. “My brother always knew he wanted to be a professional wrestler. He idolized my dad, trained all over the world, and pursued his dream relentlessly. Now, I’m living his dream. I just wish I could tell him that I’m brave like him now.”
Her tattoo, Patience, is a tribute to him. “His favorite song was ‘Patience’ by Guns N’ Roses. Every time I look at it, it reminds me to take my time and trust the process.”
Finding Balance: Career, Love, and the Future
As one of WWE’s top superstars, Flair admits to struggling with balance. “I want it all. I want to main event WrestleMania, have a healthy relationship, get married again for the right reasons, and one day have kids. But I have to remind myself to enjoy the process.”
Her biggest lesson? Confidence. “I didn’t believe in myself for a long time. But I’ve learned that your past doesn’t define you. You learn from your wounds and mistakes, and that’s how you grow.”
Charlotte Flair’s journey is a testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of embracing one’s own path. Whether she’s in the ring or sharing her story, she continues to inspire women everywhere to believe in themselves and chase their dreams.
