Brooke Shields on Confidence, Resilience, and Reinventing Life After 40

Ever since Brooke Shields made her acting debut at just 11 months old, she has lived her life in the public eye. Now, in an inspiring conversation on Heal Squad with Maria Menounos, Shields shares her journey of self-discovery, confidence, and resilience, particularly as she embraces life over 40. With her new digital wellness brand, Beginning Is Now, Shields is on a mission to help women feel empowered, vibrant, and in control of their lives—no matter their age.

Embracing a New Beginning

For many women, turning 40 can feel like a turning point, often accompanied by societal pressures that suggest their best years are behind them. Shields, however, sees it differently. “I feel sexier and stronger now,” she says. “All the women I know are pivoting after 40, doing completely different things, starting new jobs, changing relationships, and embracing life in a way they never have before.”

Despite decades of success in the entertainment industry, Shields acknowledges the challenges women face when they are no longer the target audience for marketing campaigns or media representation. “You’re either in your 20s or you’re marketed dentures. There’s no in-between,” she says. Beginning Is Now was born from Shields’ desire to change this narrative and offer women a space where they are seen, heard, and celebrated.

The Pressure to Stay ‘Ageless’

Aging in Hollywood comes with its own set of challenges, and Shields is no stranger to the pressure of maintaining a youthful appearance. “At some point, you start to get, ‘Oh my God, you never age! You look exactly the same!’” she explains. While meant as a compliment, these statements can contribute to an unrealistic expectation that women must strive to remain frozen in time.

“The whole point is, life is going to happen. Wrinkles are going to come. Things are going to sag,” she says. Rather than focusing on being ‘ageless,’ Shields emphasizes vitality and self-care. “It’s about feeling good in your skin and embracing what makes you happy at any stage of life.”

The Role of Resilience

Shields attributes much of her confidence to her ability to overcome adversity. “The hard times, the failures, the rejection—those experiences make you stronger,” she says. “I’ve always been stubborn, and I don’t want to be told ‘no.’ If there’s something I don’t know how to do, I want to conquer it.”

Her journey has not been without its struggles. From intense media scrutiny as a child star to personal losses and setbacks, Shields has learned that resilience is built over time. “I started to take stock of all the good I do have instead of focusing on what I don’t. That mental shift changes everything.”

Therapy and Healing

A firm believer in therapy, Shields credits her decades of counseling with helping her navigate life’s challenges. “I’ve been going to the same therapist for almost 30 years,” she reveals. “Therapy gave me perspective and helped me stay grounded through the scrutiny and judgment that comes with being in the public eye.”

She also recognizes the importance of surrounding herself with the right people. “When you have all this negativity thrown at you, it’s crucial to carve out a support system—whether that’s professionals, friends, or family—who keep you grounded and remind you of your worth.”

Parenting in a Social Media Era

As a mother of two daughters, Shields acknowledges the unique challenges of raising children in today’s digital landscape. “The drama they experience in their friend groups, combined with social media, is brutal,” she says. Shields prioritizes open communication and brutal honesty. “If I make a mistake as a mom, I own up to it. I apologize. I want my daughters to see that it’s okay to admit when we’re wrong and to learn from it.”

She also insists on instilling values like respect and independence. “Manners were a huge thing for me. Look people in the eyes. Say thank you. I raised them to have strong opinions and to push back when needed. Even if it drives me crazy, I like that they have that confidence.”

The Birth of Beginning Is Now

Despite her long-standing success, Shields found herself frustrated by the lack of resources for women over 40. Beginning Is Now started as a passion project but quickly evolved into a thriving community. “Women need a space where they can feel empowered and inspired,” she explains. “We focus on movement, self-care, sleep, and overall well-being. It’s about creating possibilities at any age.”

Shields emphasizes that the platform is about more than just wellness—it’s about embracing change and celebrating new chapters. “I’m not the guru; I’m the conduit. I bring in experts to help women realize that they’re not alone in this journey.”

A Testament to Strength

Perhaps one of the most defining moments of Shields’ resilience came when she suffered a major injury—a broken femur that left her hospitalized for a month. “I had to literally learn to walk again,” she shares. “It was a humbling experience, but it reinforced everything Beginning Is Now stands for. I could have thrown in the towel, but I didn’t. I kept going.”

Her story is a powerful reminder that setbacks are not the end, but rather, a chance to begin again. “There’s so much more ahead,” she says. “You are not over. You are just getting started.”
