Barberie has also been deeply involved in securing signatures for petitions, a practice started by Doris Tate, Sharon’s mother. Thanks to these efforts, California governors have repeatedly denied parole to key Manson family members. A Personal Connection to True Crime: The BTK Killer’s Daughter
Barberie’s connection to true crime extends beyond the Manson case. She has formed a close friendship with Kerri Rawson, the daughter of Dennis Rader—better known as the BTK Killer. Rader’s reign of terror spanned decades, during which he taunted law enforcement while leading a double life as a devoted family man.
Barberie and Rawson bonded over their respective battles—Rawson with the trauma of discovering her father’s horrific crimes and Barberie with her own battle against breast cancer. “We were both dealing with major life challenges at the same time. That shared experience really cemented our friendship,” Barberie shares. The two have since used their platforms to discuss the psychological aftermath of being connected to true crime on such an intimate level.
The El Chapo Connection: A Hollywood Star Caught in a Narco Drama
Perhaps one of the most unexpected twists in Barberie’s life is her involvement in the real-life saga of Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Her close friend, Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, found herself in the crosshairs of international controversy after secretly meeting with El Chapo alongside actor Sean Penn.
Del Castillo, who had been corresponding with El Chapo about telling his life story, unknowingly walked into a media storm when Penn wrote an article for Rolling Stone about their meeting. The Mexican government, embarrassed that a Hollywood actor had found the fugitive drug lord before law enforcement could, turned their ire toward del Castillo. Barberie immediately stepped in to protect her friend, helping her secure top legal representation.
“She called me in a panic. She was being harassed, and the government was trying to pin something on her just because she met with him,” Barberie recalls. With her intervention, del Castillo was able to fight off legal repercussions and regain control over her career.
Surviving Breast Cancer: A Battle That Changed Her Life
Beyond her advocacy work and entanglements with true crime, Barberie has faced her own deeply personal struggles. In 2018, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, a moment that forced her to reevaluate everything. Opting for a double mastectomy, she approached her battle with the same strength and determination that have defined her career.
During her treatment, Barberie found unexpected support from Debra Tate, who had also battled breast cancer. “There was this eerie connection between us—Sharon played a woman dying of breast cancer in Valley of the Dolls, her sister developed it, and then I did, too. It felt surreal.”
Despite the physical and emotional toll, Barberie emerged stronger, using her platform to encourage women to be proactive about their health. “Early detection saves lives,” she urges. “I caught mine early, and that made all the difference.”
