Terry Crews & Rebecca King Crews on Love, Forgiveness, and Building an Unbreakable Marriage

The Truth About Relationships: Why Success Doesn’t Guarantee Happiness

When it comes to life, many assume that success in one area automatically translates to fulfillment in others. Terry Crews, actor, author, and former NFL player, and his wife Rebecca King Crews, actress, singer, and producer, are here to challenge that belief.

In a heartfelt conversation on Heal Squad with Maria Menounos, the power couple, together since 1989, opened up about the challenges they’ve faced—ranging from fame and addiction to health battles—and how they’ve built a resilient marriage. Their new audiobook, Stronger Together: How Fame, Failure, and Faith Transformed Our Lives, dives into the real struggles of marriage and how couples can navigate difficulties with love, adaptability, and faith.

A Love Story That Defied the Odds

Terry and Rebecca’s journey began in 1988 when they met at church. At the time, Terry was a sophomore at Western Michigan University with dreams of playing in the NFL and moving to Hollywood to make movies. Rebecca, a theater major, had aspirations of performing on Broadway.

“I had made a list of what I wanted in a husband,” Rebecca revealed. “And the more I got to know Terry, the more I realized he was the man I had described.”

Rebecca’s list included four key traits: a love for God, a commitment to family, the desire to have children, and a passion for the arts. Though Terry was younger than her, he fit the criteria perfectly. “Sometimes, you just know,” she said.

Success Doesn’t Equal a Strong Marriage

Many couples fall into the trap of believing that financial and career success equates to a thriving marriage. Terry and Rebecca debunked this misconception.

“We’ll spend all our time studying our careers, but we need to be spending more time studying how to be a great husband, a great father, and a great partner,” Terry said.

Rebecca added, “People assume that if your career is taking off, your marriage is fine. But anything you don’t work at will disintegrate.”

The couple emphasized the importance of intentional effort, noting that marriages fail not because of one catastrophic event, but due to gradual neglect over time.

The Power of Adaptability in Marriage

A crucial lesson Terry and Rebecca have learned is the ability to adapt. After years of chasing her Broadway dream, Rebecca shifted her focus to raising their children while Terry pursued his NFL and Hollywood careers. “I didn’t want my daughter to be a backpack I carried around while trying to ‘make it,’” she said.

When Terry realized his heart was no longer in football, Rebecca was the one who pushed him toward their original dream. “She told me, ‘Remember when you said we were moving to L.A. to make movies? Your heart’s not in football anymore. Let’s go.’” They packed up their family and moved, despite not knowing a single person in Hollywood.

“Life is about shifting and evolving,” Terry said. “If you want a successful relationship, you have to be willing to adjust.”

Confronting Childhood Trauma & Addictive Behavior

Both Terry and Rebecca grew up in households shaped by addiction. Terry’s father was an alcoholic, and his mother was deeply religious to the point of control. Rebecca’s early exposure to dysfunctional relationships led her to tolerate toxic behaviors for too long.

“I put up with more than I should have,” Rebecca admitted. “Terry was addicted—not to drugs or alcohol—but to work, to working out, to success. And our family suffered because of it.”

Terry acknowledged his workaholism, adding that he justified his absence at home by telling himself that providing financially was enough. “I thought, ‘When I get here, we’ll be happy. When I get there, we’ll be happy.’ But my wife was tired of the promises.”

The Breaking Point & The Power of Forgiveness

The turning point came when Rebecca finally had enough. “I was done. I was ready to leave,” she said.

Terry recalled feeling shocked. “I thought, ‘Okay, fine, go ahead,’ because of my male ego. But then, this little voice inside me asked, ‘Maybe it’s me?’”

That realization led Terry to seek therapy for his struggles, including an addiction to pornography that predated their marriage. “I thought marriage would fix everything, but it didn’t. When Rebecca left, I had to get better for myself—not to win her back, but for me.”

Through deep personal work, Terry transformed, and Rebecca, guided by faith, felt compelled to forgive him. “I was ready to walk away, but then I heard God telling me, ‘Forgive him.’”

This moment of divine guidance wasn’t easy for Rebecca, but it changed everything. “I told God, ‘I’d be a fool to forgive him.’ And then I heard, ‘Well, I forgive all of humanity.’ I had no argument after that.”

The Keys to a Lasting Relationship

Now, after four decades together, the Crews offer their three biggest relationship lessons:

  1. You Can’t Love & Control Someone at the Same Time – “True love is voluntary,” Terry said. “If Rebecca stays, it has to be because she chooses to.”
  2. Forgiveness is Non-Negotiable – “A relationship can be buried under small resentments,” Rebecca shared. “You have to confront issues, apologize, and let them go.”
  3. Invite Faith Into Your Relationship – “We’re two rings linked together, but God is the chain that holds us up,” Rebecca said. “With faith, love becomes unconditional.”

Final Thoughts

Terry and Rebecca Crews have endured challenges that would have broken most couples—yet they emerged stronger. Their story is a testament to love, faith, and relentless personal growth. As they step into a new chapter with their children grown, they’re embracing life’s next adventure together.
