Cody Alan: Finding Truth and Living Authentically

Country music personality Cody Alan recently joined Better Together with Maria Menounos to discuss his incredible journey to self-acceptance, his book Here’s the Thing, and the lessons he’s learned along the way. Alan, who came out as gay in 2017, opened up about his struggles with identity, religion, and the fear of disappointing those he loved. His story is one of resilience, love, and ultimately, freedom.

Knowing from an Early Age

Alan shared that he knew he was gay from a young age, recalling childhood moments when he was more drawn to male figures than female ones. However, growing up in a conservative Southern Baptist household, there was no space for him to explore these feelings openly. “I thought it was a secret I would carry to my grave,” Alan admitted.

With no LGBTQ+ representation in country music or in his community, he felt isolated and struggled with internalized shame. Instead of acknowledging his true identity, Alan focused on distractions—his burgeoning career as a country DJ and his deep involvement in religion. For a time, he even converted to Mormonism, hoping it would provide the answers he was seeking.

Coming to Terms with the Truth

As Alan built his career and family, he continued to suppress his true self. He married a woman and had two children, but the internal conflict persisted. Eventually, he realized that his unhappiness stemmed from hiding who he truly was.

The turning point came in 2010 when he sat down with his wife for what he described as the toughest conversation of his life. “I told her, ‘I’ve always felt this way. I don’t know why, but I have, and I can’t change it.’”

Though the conversation was filled with sadness and uncertainty, his wife responded with love. Instead of reacting with anger or rejection, she stood by him as they navigated their next steps together. Over time, they found a way to co-parent their children and maintain a strong friendship built on mutual respect and understanding.

Breaking the News to Family and the World

After telling his wife, Alan took his time before sharing the news with others. He underwent therapy, read extensively on LGBTQ+ issues, and explored his faith in a new light. Eventually, he came out publicly in 2017, sharing his truth on Instagram.

Surprisingly, the response was overwhelmingly positive. From fellow country stars like Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban to his devoted fan base, Alan received an outpouring of love and support. However, he did face some losses. Some church friends distanced themselves, and there were a few negative voices on social media. Despite this, Alan focused on the immense relief he felt finally being able to live authentically.

Faith and a New Perspective

Though Alan stepped away from organized religion, he maintains a strong spiritual connection with God. “I feel closer to God now than I ever did before,” he shared. He no longer views faith as a rigid set of rules but rather as a deeply personal journey of love and acceptance.

One of the most powerful lessons he learned in therapy was that life isn’t simply black or white. “There are shades of gray, and it’s okay to exist somewhere along that spectrum,” he explained. This realization freed him from the constraints of societal expectations and allowed him to embrace his own path.

A Brighter Future for Country Music

Alan’s courage to come out in 2017 was a landmark moment in country music, an industry historically resistant to LGBTQ+ representation. While pioneers like Ty Herndon and Shelly Wright came before him, Alan’s story was unique in that he was still in the prime of his career.

Thankfully, the country music world has begun embracing more diversity, with artists like T.J. Osborne of Brothers Osborne publicly coming out. Alan believes that inclusivity only makes the industry stronger. “When we open up and let everyone in, that’s when the greatest stuff happens,” he said.

Lessons from His Journey

Alan’s journey offers valuable lessons for anyone struggling with their identity or facing difficult personal revelations:

  1. Listen to Yourself – “Your heart knows the truth,” Alan says. Suppressing who you are only leads to unhappiness and inner turmoil.
  2. Take Your Time – Coming out doesn’t have to be an overnight decision. Alan’s process took years, allowing him to make peace with himself and those around him.
  3. Surround Yourself with Love – Not everyone will accept you, and that’s okay. Focus on those who do and lean into their support.
  4. Find Strength in Faith or Spirituality – Whether through religion or personal spirituality, find something that brings you peace and purpose.
  5. Lead with Compassion – Alan’s wife’s loving response helped shape his journey. If you’re on the other side of someone’s coming out story, approach it with empathy and understanding.

Looking Ahead

Alan’s book, Here’s the Thing, set for release on November 9th, dives deeper into his experiences, offering readers a heartfelt and insightful look into his life. It’s not just for those struggling with their sexuality—it’s for anyone facing a challenge that requires courage, self-reflection, and honesty.

Cody Alan’s story is a reminder that living authentically is worth the risk. As he put it, “Once I let it go and freed all that, it was like taking rocks out of my backpack—I could finally move forward.”
